Different Terms of Mobile Networks

For consumers, it is often difficult to distinguish the difference between the many names of mobile networks. 3G mobile network is famous and mostly used. Differences among mobile networks

The GSM 2G network

This network, also called GSM for Global System for Mobile Communications, only allows to exchange by voice. This digital standard was created in 1982, more than thirty years ago.

The 2.5G GPRS network

Meaning General Packet Radio Service , this network is also called 2.5G because it is located between 2G generation and 3G. It is possible with this one to exchange data (SMS, data, calls …) with a maximum theoretical throughput of 171.2 kilobits per second.

The EDGE network 2.75G

More commonly known as EDGE for Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution , the rate here is 384 kilobits per second. This standard is referred to as a “pre-3G”.

The 3G network

The third generation of mobile telephony standards (UMTS) offers to exchange at 1.9 megabits per second, about 5 times faster than the previous generation.

The 3G +

Called HSDPA, the 3G + allows to increase the theoretical data exchange rate to 14.4 megabits per second, which is still 7.5 times more than the initial 3G.

The H +

There is much talk about it at the moment: it is also called Dual Carrier or HSPA +. In this case, the throughput is 42 megabits per second. This is a network approaching 4G, although the throughput remains more than two times lower.

The 4G network

With the fourth generation (4G LTE), data exchange can exceed 100 megabits per second, if not more, and thus launch the very high mobile broadband. In reality, bandwidth is shared between users. The fewer users that use the network, the higher the throughput.

The 4G +

The 4G +, also called 4G LTE Advanced offers a much faster speed than the classic 4G. Indeed, while the 4G offers a theoretical throughput of between 100 and 150 megabits per second, the 4G + proposes in 2017 almost twice better, or 200 to 300 gigabits per second of theoretical throughput! The 4G + network has the advantage of being able to cumulate the frequencies, whose different Internet connection add up. Bouygues Telecom thus claims the possibility of combining three different mobile frequencies. The mobinaute must however be in the covered area and benefit from a mobile package with data internet, as well as a smartphone compatible to be able to benefit from the new technology.

Unlike 4G, the 4G + (and higher) can answer a phone call while staying connected to the Internet in 4G +. Previously, the network automatically bridged the network in 3G or 3G +, limiting navigation capabilities during a simultaneous phone call. The 4G + UHD network, the Ultra High Debit Mobile

The 4G + UHD network for Ultra High Debit Mobile (or 4G ++) delivers 3 times faster than the classic 4G that we know. In practice, operators rely on several bands of frequencies that they accumulate to be able to offer more bandwidth, namely the 800, 1800 and 2600 MHz. Smartphones are still rare to offer compatibility with the 4G + UHD. This is the latest and clearly high-end smartphone, such as the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge at Samsung, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7Plus for Apple, as well as the Sony Xperia XZ and Huawei Mate 9.
